NIGERIA
The Story
The federal government yesterday confirmed it has no interest in reaching a truce with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
What confirmation?
The FG presented a certificate of registration to the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA), a breakaway faction of the lecturers’ union. The presentation was done by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, with invitation extended to newsmen by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Oshundun Olajide.
What does this mean for ASUU?
The registration of the new Union, which is led by its National Coordinator, Niyi Sunmonu, a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is the FG's latest effort to force the hand of ASUU into a compromise. This follows ASUU's refusal to comply with a ruling by the National Industrial Court on Sept 21, 2022 ordering members of the union to return to work.
Nigerians react....
There have been mixed reactions from Nigerians to the CONUA registration. While some blamed both the FG and ASUU for the lingering dispute, others condemned the new union for sabotage of the University system. "And what's the objective of this parallel Union? If it's to evade responsibility and commitment towards varsity education, it will fail. It's okay to have a parallel Union under the law, but the incoming Union should know the cane used in flogging the first wife is up there waiting for the arrival of the 2nd wife. Let's see how far this romance will last but I know govt is an unfaithful groom reputed for reneging on marriage covenant", a comment read. Source

The Story
The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, yesterday sacked the commander of the country's infantry forces, his son Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his serial misbehavior on Twitter.
What misbehavior?
Tagged "the tweeting general" of Uganda, Lt. Gen. Kainerugaba has recently incited resentment among some Ugandans who view his frequent remarks on Twitter as provocative and occasionally even dangerous. In the latest episode of his recalcitrance, which triggered his dismissal, Kainerugaba tweeted an unprovoked threat to capture the capital of East African neighbors Kenya, drawing widespread concern in the sub-region. “It wouldn’t take us, my army and me, 2 weeks to capture Nairobi,” he tweeted Monday.
Is there a dispute between Kenya and Uganda?
Not at all, which makes Kainerugaba's behavior quite concerning. In other such acts of unprofessionalism from an army officer in relation to another country, he tweeted in favor of the rebels in Tigray facing off against Ethiopian government forces. He has expressed support for the rebels battling in eastern Congo. He asserted that all Africans back Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. He also recently said that he was prepared to present the prospective female Prime Minister of Italy 100 long-horned cattle as bride price.
How did Kenya react to the threat?
Kenya's Foreign Minister tweeted on Tuesday that he held a meeting with the Ugandan envoy, as Kainerugaba's remarks infuriated many Kenyans. Kainerugaba's tweets were disregarded by Uganda's foreign ministry in a statement that referred to a "harmonious relationship that we value." Museveni and Kenyan President William Ruto have a cordial relationship. During his recent inauguration, Ruto referred to Museveni as the "father" of the region.
According to a statement released by the Ugandan military, Kainerugaba was elevated to a four-star general despite being fired from his position as the leader of the country's infantry forces, and will continue to serve as his father's military adviser. Those who know Kainerugaba describe him as a devoted military man, and those who support him claim that his tweets are humorous attempts that shouldn't be taken seriously. Source

The Story
The election of Italy's first female Prime Minister has raised fears among the country's immigrants on what the future holds.
Is there reason for them to be concerned?
The founder of the Fratelli d'Italia (Brothers of Italy), Giorgia Meloni, will be Italy's first female Prime Minister. For the first time since Benito Mussolini's overthrow during World War II, her election last month will shift the nation to the far right. According to its website, The Brothers of Italy (founded by Meloni), is a national-conservative populist party opposed to undocumented immigration. “What happens when voters can’t find work? They blame migrants", an immigrant said.
What are the PM's plans?
One of the main subjects of Meloni's campaign was to restrict immigration. Meloni advocated stronger border restrictions and suggested setting up centers under the jurisdiction of the European Union to examine refugee claims. According to 2018 poll findings, 35% of Italians - an increase of 17 percentage points from 2014 - consider immigration to be one of the most pressing challenges facing their nation.
How is immigration a problem?
Many believe that Italy's unemployment challenge is worsened by immigration. After Spain and Greece, Italy had the third-highest unemployment rate in the EU as of August, at 8.1%. According to the most recent census records, there are roughly 5 million people living in Italy who were not born there, accounting for less than 9% of the 59.2 million people who call the country home. The new PM has referred to pro-immigration measures as part of a conspiracy by the left-wing to “replace Italians with immigrants".
To stop "illegal departures" to Italy, Meloni has called for a "naval blockade" at sea. She opposed the "Ius Scholae" law, which would have given citizenship rights to children under the age of 12 who immigrated to Italy for schooling. Source

FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE
Chelsea (2012-13) are the only Champions League defending champions to crash out of the group stage.
However, they went on to win the Europa league that season under Rafa Benitez.
In doing so, they became the first (and only) team to be holders of the UCL and Europa League at the same time, as they were in possession of both titles, before Bayern Munich were crowned the new UCL champions 10 days later.
